Spectrum Drum n Bass

Many massive names in the scene, local DJs and guests have passed through these doors to devastate the appreciative crowds. It’s always a good party.

When the bank holidays come round it’s time for one thing, Croydon’s biggest and best Drum n Bass night, Spectrum. Created more than 10 years ago, it is the longest standing DnB event in the surrounding area. The main reason that the night has lasted so long is that it concentrates on the MUSIC. All attitude and egos are left outside.

Residents have been and gone, including members of DMZ, Mek, Krystal and Logik who contributed and supported the nights for many, many years. Everyone brought their own character and style to each event and their contribution over time is ingrained into the dance floor. Local guests have never let the side down, such as Wilsh, Madcap, Lab Creation, Probert and Smooth who have always shown off their skills and stand side by side with the main acts in the crowd’s reaction.

The new batch of residents ain’t too shabby either:

Andy Skopes:

The longest standing resident was passed the torch of helping to run the night with the Blacksheep. He has tried to get down some of the most interesting, diverse names and is always looking for the new breed.
He worked at the infamous Croydon record store Wax City back in the day, making lots of friends and contacts, while compiling an extensive record collection. During this time he started producing and had his first finished tune played by Bailey on BBC Radio 1xtra. From then on he was addicted.
Next step was signing his first tunes to local labels Jerona Fruits and Inperspective. From then on he gained support from big name DJ’s playing his music around the world and with his affiliation with these labels and reputation began DJing around the UK and Europe. To this date he has more than
These days he works very closely with Mr Joseph’s Fizzy Beats label and Mako’s Utopia Music, based in Bristol. He also has tunes coming out on the legendary Good Looking records, run by LTJ Bukem and Doc Scott’s 31 Records (the label that gave Pendulum their first big break). Watch this space.

New releases coming soon!

Mako:

Although being introduced to the genre quite late on in the 90’s when attending university in Bristol, Mako’s musical background enabled him to pick up Djing quickly.  Earning his Djing stripes playing week in week out as a resident of renowned London night Spectrum, and Bristol based Intrigue and Dissident, he now sees himself sharing lineups with many of his peers in clubs across the UK and further afield.  The label boss looks to use his varied and cultured sets to showcase the talent currently associated with Utopia as well as his own spinning skills.

Using his own label, Utopia Music, as a vehicle for musical expression, Mako wants to guide and nurture high quality, pioneering drum and bass.

Progressing into production after becoming hooked on Djing, the years of hard work are beginning to pay off.  With collaborations with Mute, Survival, Break and Andy Skopes receiving regular rotation, and with high profile remixes by D Bridge, the future looks musical.
